Yachtie chats to wife while awaiting textbook rescue 100nm off NZ
A Kiwi yachtsman did ‘all the right things’ when his 15-metre vessel began taking on water 100 nautical miles west of Kaitaia early this morning. He activated his EPIRB rescue beacon to alert the Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand of his rapidly deteriorating situation, and evacuated his sinking yacht for its life raft.

RORC Caribbean 600 – America’s Cup winner reports from aboard Momo

USCG says boaters should be concerned about installing “decorative” lighting on their boats in various places, including underwater, on the rubrail, or just above the waterline. Stu Bannatyne, triple round the world race winner, joins Doyle Sails
Doyle Sails New Zealand has announced that Stuart Bannatyne has joined their team as Grand Prix Race Sales and Projects rep. Best known for his Volvo Ocean Race record of seven events winning three. He has broken the world 24 hour monohull record on five occasions. He was named New Zealand Yachtsman of the Year in 2009. Bannatyne is also an ISAF World Youth Champion in the Laser class.

10,000 more distress beacons registered, 50 more lives saved in 2015
The number of registered distress beacons in New Zealand increased sharply by 20 per cent in 2015 (up 10,027 from 49,785 in December 2014 to 59,812 in December 2015). Of the 622 rescue beacon activations last year, 194 led to rescues (167 in 2014) and 63 lives were saved (12 in 2014).
