Distress beacons save lives – two yacht rescues completed safely
Both solo-yachtsman whose vessels were badly damaged north of New Zealand at the weekend have been rescued successfully because they had distress beacons. See dramatic images of both rescues. Weather conditions had been bad, with winds up to 50 knots and five metre waves.

Second rescue for Norwegian sailor in 50kt winds and heavy seas
A rescue operation is underway for a second yacht in distress north of New Zealand. The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is in contact with a Norwegian yachtsman whose damaged yacht, Ilanga, is in 50 knot winds and very heavy seas. The yachtsman is the only person on board and activated his EPIRB (distress beacon) at 4.14 PM today.

Kiwi yachtsman found in life-raft off Norfolk Island
A New Zealand yachtsman has been found in a life raft 90 nautical miles east of Norfolk Island. Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand has been coordinating the search for the yachtsman since 6.15 am today. Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator Dave Wilson said RCCNZ responded when a distress beacon from the yacht Waimanu was activated.

Collinson FX Market Commentary – Nov 17 – NZ Confidence drifts lower
NZ Consumer Confidence drifted lower, reflecting the soft conditions in the NZ political environment, allowing the NZD to slip to 0.6850. Australian Employment numbers were lower, although the headline number improved, from 5.5% to 5.4%. The Labour market remains strong but will not deter the accommodative monetary policy from the RBA.

Boating this summer – take care out there and lower the death toll
Safer Boating Week (October 13-20) ended Friday, recreational boating fatalities seem to be decreasing, and Maritime NZ Acting Director, Nigel Clifford, is urging boaties to keep up the good work and take care over the coming summer. Mr Clifford said on average 19-20 boaties died annually over recent years. Last year there were 13 fatalities and to date this year there have been 12.
