RORC Caribbean 600 – America’s Cup winner reports from aboard Momo

The Caribbean 600 takes the fleet on a 600nm zig-zag course around several islands between Anguilla and Gadaualope in the Caribbean.

United States Coast Guard issues alert on use of unapproved nav lights

USCG says boaters should be concerned about installing “decorative” lighting on their boats in various places, including underwater, on the rubrail, or just above the waterline. Stu Bannatyne, triple round the world race winner, joins Doyle Sails

Doyle Sails New Zealand has announced that Stuart Bannatyne has joined their team as Grand Prix Race Sales and Projects rep. Best known for his Volvo Ocean Race record of seven events winning three. He has broken the world 24 hour monohull record on five occasions. He was named New Zealand Yachtsman of the Year in 2009. Bannatyne is also an ISAF World Youth Champion in the Laser class.

10,000 more distress beacons registered, 50 more lives saved in 2015

The number of registered distress beacons in New Zealand increased sharply by 20 per cent in 2015 (up 10,027 from 49,785 in December 2014 to 59,812 in December 2015). Of the 622 rescue beacon activations last year, 194 led to rescues (167 in 2014) and 63 lives were saved (12 in 2014).

Southern Spars & North Sails Australia collaborate on furling boom

North Sails and Southern Spars delivered the first of a kind collaboration out of its manufacturing base in Sri Lanka. The 6.6m Carbon Furling Boom with manual drive was delivered to the client, Windcraft Australia, with the sail rolled around the mandrel – ready to install on the mast and hoist the sail.

More recreational boaties wearing lifejackets

In good news for boating safety, more recreational boaties are wearing lifejackets the entire time they are on the water. Maritime New Zealand has released new research into recreational boating behaviour that shows in 2015 78 per cent of recreational boaties reported wearing a lifejacket the entire time they were on the water. This is up from 67 per cent in 2014, and 62 per cent in 2013.

Wellington boatie placed under ‘house-arrest’

A boatie who had bought a “tired” yacht for just $500 online has had the vessel restricted to use on Wellington harbour after threatening to sail to Westport without an engine, radio or safety equipment. Another online shopper did the right thing in buying an emergency beacon (EPIRB – emergency position-indicating radio beacon) before heading out in his boat.

Rowing incident outcome has relevance for sailing coaches and clubs

An out of court settlement has been reached following an incident where a coach boat was involved in a collision with a rowing eight, and two rowers were seriously injured. Both the school and the coach have acknowledged that failure to use a “kill switch” system and the fact that the coach was alone as skipper and coach aboard the support boat were factors leading to the collision.

Captain Calamity gets The Silly Season underway after grounding

A 63yr old man has in a hypothermic state, kicked off the Silly Season after sailing from Auckland to Whangarei on a yacht he had never sailed before, at night with no lifejacket after drinking alcohol, sparking an almost five-hour search in Northland, after have gave a position 10nm away from his actual location, when he ran aground.

Huge increase as hundreds of thousands use marine forecast apps

The “MetService Marine” smartphone app is now being used on average 235,513 times a month – this is more than double last year’s rate of 112,852 times a month. In addition, more than 100,000 boaties are using Coastguard Nowcasting via its app, VHF marine radio and text services. The app was launched 18 months ago.

The Maritime Operations Centre has already this year received 359 emergency VHF radio calls from recreational boaties. Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) Manager, Mike Hill said this highlights that communications equipment is an essential part of safe recreational boating.

70-year-old solo sailor rescued after head injury

A 70-year-old solo sailor has been rescued from his 10m yacht 20 km off the Wairarapa coast after being struck on the head by the vessel’s boom. The man, sailing from Auckland to Picton, made a mayday call shortly before 11am, and the Rescue Coordination Centre NZ managed the rescue operation.
